Are You Consistently Buying USA-Made Products for Yourself?

November 13th, 2013 No comments

Yes–Buy USA Means You too!

bu usa-made productsI was at a trade show a few weeks back and stopped at various booths from American manufacturers and one branch of the military– and they noticed they were all handing out promotional items that were Made in China.

That’s right.

These organizations were spending thousands of dollars exhibiting at this particular trade show to promote a “Buy American” theme– and they didn’t even have the forethought to buy American-made promotional items.

Where is that logic?

Where is the consistency of messaging?

How can you expect others to Buy American when you don’t even believe in the cause?

Vet your suppliers to make sure that they are using American factories — for everything!

Buy and drive American-made cars.

How Are You Selling Your Buy American Benefits to Your Customers?

October 15th, 2013 No comments

Are You Selling the Benefits and Appeal of Buy American to Your Customers…and to Their Customers?

American madeAustin, Texas:  We all want our clients to Buy American from our factories and plants and other facilities.

But how are you marketing that message?

How you communicate “Buy American” makes all the difference in your community – and to your customers and to their customers. How active will you be in getting that message across clearly to  the public?

Are you counting on your customers to clearly understand the logistics benefits of a local or nearby vendor? Don’t count on it.

Do you think your customers think logically and understand the benefits to the community for buying American? Don’t count on it.

Are you giving speeches to your local Chambers of Commerce and other organizations on the benefits of Made in the USA manufacturing — or are you expecting your customers to “just get it”?  They won’t

Are you teaming up with other factories and producers in town to get the message across in a unified front and voice?  Why not?

Is your social media working around the clock to describe the benefits of Buying American – and sharing case studies, interviews with employees and their families, and other feel-good stories? Why not?

It is up to every American factory, American plant and American foundry, union, etc -to keep extolling the benefits of American made goods.

Don’t expect the public to be thinking about your business.

It is your job to share, to educate and to make aware of the benefits of Buying American.

What do you plan to do about it?

Remember, the American job you save may be your own.

Is the Buy US Movement reaching a Tipping Point After The US Olympic Team Uniform Fiasco?

July 13th, 2012 No comments
Should Americans be angry that the US Olympic uniforms were made in China?

American Proud? US Olympic Uniforms Not American Made. Hypocritical or Good Business Decision?

Austin, Texas: There has been a lot of press recently on the fact that the US Olympic team’s uniforms were Made in China and not domestically. The debate centers around whether that is an affront to the American people or a shining example of American capitalism.

Doesn’t patriotism mean anything any longer?

Is it legal to outsource American flags, US Olympic team uniforms and US Military equipment and uniforms? Sure.

Does it seem right that many of these goods are made overseas?  Probably not.

As I have mentioned in previous blog posts, I am not advocating government mandates to force companies to Buy USA.  That is short-sighted and leads to protectionism, trade wars and tariffs.

I am suggesting that people do what is right–even if it costs them a little bit more.

Ralph Lauren, designer of the Olympic uniforms, is surely not going to be selling their product line at WalMart, so the pennies they saved by outsourcing were not crucial. I am sure they will be adding a significant markup regardless of the savings.

How about positive goodwill they might have earned for going with American factories instead of the negative backlash they are getting on TV?

Why has this news resonated so much with the American people?

Have we reached a Tipping Point, as Malcolm Gladwell alluded to?

Can this be the final straw, where Americans say, “Enough is Enough”?

Can this be our Alamo–our rallying cry?

I hope so!

Americans, take a few moments to look at teh country of origin befor ebuying your next product. Then see if there is a comparable US-made product that can be substituted.

You will be surprised that American products are very comparable in many areas.  Maybe not in electronics, but in most other areas, there are American-made products that cost about the same.

That’s right.  “About the same”.

And isn’t the fact that we are supporting American jobs on workers who will now have money to buy products and services that your company makes worth something?

Isn’t there value to buying American products so that these workers now can pay more in taxes-which will hep improve the nation’s infrastructure, pay for roads and schools, pay down our national debt and support our military?

Let’s speak with our wallets and our purses  and spend money supporting American workers.

Let’s keep Americans working so we can all strive for the American dream.

Buy American — because it really does matter.

Do Unemployed Americans Need To Go Back to School to Learn New Skill Sets?

November 29th, 2011 No comments

WSJ claims there is a lack of skilled workers for new jobs marketAustin, Texas: A recent article in the Wall Street Journal shows that many American companies are willing to hire, but the lack of qualified job skills is lacking.

The article states that though companies may be able to get their unskilled work done by shifting around existing staff or using temps, a shortage of skilled workers is harder to finesse. A Deloitte study found that 74% of manufacturers said a shortage of skilled production workers had a “significant negative impact” on either their productivity or expansion plans.

“There’s a tremendous shortage of skilled workers,” said Craig Giffi, a vice chairman of the consulting firm Deloitte. A recent survey it did found that 83% of manufacturers reported a moderate or severe shortage of skilled production workers to hire.

Another example cited in the article was AAR Corp., a Chicago-based aviation-parts manufacturer, which has 600 job openings, mostly for skilled trade jobs like welders and maintenance mechanics. Chief Executive David Storch said the shortage of workers has forced the company to pass up business and delay some manufacturing work. He said the company would like to start a third shift at its Indianapolis aircraft maintenance facility but has been unable to do so because of worker shortages.

“It’s a little bit frustrating to sit around and talk about the ability to grow your business if you could only hire skilled people,” Mr. Storch said.

“At a 9% unemployment rate, it would seem that people would go back to trade or technical skills to learn the skills that are needed in getting hired”, says Robert Piller, President of BuyUSPromos.com.  “Talk to the human resource directors of major employers in your area to see what type of skill sets they are looking for, and go back to school, if need be. Community colleges are an excellent place to start, as are technical schools and even online. Going back to school may seem overwhelming, at first to some people, but the new skills can help open doors that might previously have been closed.”

“In every recovery you hear about the mismatch of skills to available jobs, but this time around it seems particularly pernicious,” said Dana Saporta, an economist with Credit Suisse, She estimates the skills mismatch and similar so-called structural issues add 1.5 percentage points to the unemployment rate.

Let’s sharpen our job skills and go after the jobs are are being created.  As many jobs, previously considered “blue collar” open up due to retirement and attrition, the laws of supply and demand should mean more jobs for those willing to go outside their comfort zones a little bit.

Here’s to a growing  US economy and jobs market.
