Should Politicians Be Forced to Buy American Made Promotional Products – Or Is It Their Right to Choose?

Should candidates buy only American made promotional items and swag?

Should candidates buy only American made promotional items and swag?

Austin, Texas: Should politicians be forced to buy promotional products that are only made in the USA?

Isn’t it their right as free-market capitalists to buy whatever imprinted bumper sticker, tote bag or water bottle– regardless of their country of origin?

Do people really care if their imprinted swag or gimme caps are from the United States or China or India, for that matter?

Well, the answers to the above questions in order are: NO, YES and YES.

I get several calls each day from political campaigns looking to purchase promotional items that are made in the USA.

Everything that they use can be purchased from domestic factories. Many even from union shops – including bumper stickerswater bottles, tote bags, shirts and caps.

Some do it out of patriotism and sense of duty. Hats off to them- no pun intended.

Some do it because they “got busted” speaking before a group of people and handing out Made in China pens and key chains — only to have it blow up in their face.

Others are scared to death, especially since the Ralph Lauren U.S. Olympic team uniforms were found to have been made in China…and caused them embarrassment and shame in the media for days.

Politicians and political campaigns should be buying American made promotional items because it is the right thing to do.

How can they be a party or candidate that espouses a return to jobs–when they do not support American labor themselves.

Americans can smell a hypocrite a thousand miles away.

Don’t be a campaign that says one thing and does another.

If you are for helping the middle class rise in income, support American jobs.

Buy American made products.

Not just for your campaign, but whenever there is an option.

Do it when nobody else is looking.

Do it because your really believe in this great country of ours.

Buy American-made products because you a a firm believer in the American military– and are tired of supporting foreign regimes because they have raw goods or cheap labor that we want.

Buy US-made products because you are an American.

The job you save may be your own.

Is the Buy US Movement reaching a Tipping Point After The US Olympic Team Uniform Fiasco?

July 13th, 2012 No comments
Should Americans be angry that the US Olympic uniforms were made in China?

American Proud? US Olympic Uniforms Not American Made. Hypocritical or Good Business Decision?

Austin, Texas: There has been a lot of press recently on the fact that the US Olympic team’s uniforms were Made in China and not domestically. The debate centers around whether that is an affront to the American people or a shining example of American capitalism.

Doesn’t patriotism mean anything any longer?

Is it legal to outsource American flags, US Olympic team uniforms and US Military equipment and uniforms? Sure.

Does it seem right that many of these goods are made overseas?  Probably not.

As I have mentioned in previous blog posts, I am not advocating government mandates to force companies to Buy USA.  That is short-sighted and leads to protectionism, trade wars and tariffs.

I am suggesting that people do what is right–even if it costs them a little bit more.

Ralph Lauren, designer of the Olympic uniforms, is surely not going to be selling their product line at WalMart, so the pennies they saved by outsourcing were not crucial. I am sure they will be adding a significant markup regardless of the savings.

How about positive goodwill they might have earned for going with American factories instead of the negative backlash they are getting on TV?

Why has this news resonated so much with the American people?

Have we reached a Tipping Point, as Malcolm Gladwell alluded to?

Can this be the final straw, where Americans say, “Enough is Enough”?

Can this be our Alamo–our rallying cry?

I hope so!

Americans, take a few moments to look at teh country of origin befor ebuying your next product. Then see if there is a comparable US-made product that can be substituted.

You will be surprised that American products are very comparable in many areas.  Maybe not in electronics, but in most other areas, there are American-made products that cost about the same.

That’s right.  “About the same”.

And isn’t the fact that we are supporting American jobs on workers who will now have money to buy products and services that your company makes worth something?

Isn’t there value to buying American products so that these workers now can pay more in taxes-which will hep improve the nation’s infrastructure, pay for roads and schools, pay down our national debt and support our military?

Let’s speak with our wallets and our purses  and spend money supporting American workers.

Let’s keep Americans working so we can all strive for the American dream.

Buy American — because it really does matter.

Buying American Made Products Just Because It’s the Right Thing to Do

July 2nd, 2012 No comments
Don't mandate buying US-made products--educate and encourage it instead

People should buy American made products because it is the right thing to do from a moral standpoint, not because it is mandated by law.

Austin, Texas: Whenever the discussion comes to buying US-made products, the word “protectionism” always seems to follow.

Forcing or mandating people to buy goods or services made in the United States is wrong — and only encourages tariffs and trade retaliation from other countries, causing irreparable damage to various economies.

Instead, the conversation should be on why it is important to support American jobs by buying more American-made products.

Once people understand the correlation of money flow and how a dollar spent on one single American-made product flows to another company which then flows to another, more people will “get it”

We should try to buy American made products because it keeps our neighbors employed, helps to pay local, state and federal taxes, which then flows back to our teachers, firefighters and military.

This circle should be discussed in classrooms, at Lions Club and Rotary meetings, bridge clubs and golf clubs, etc.

We do not need government intervention to force us to support American businesses.

We do need more education and common sense.

Support American businesses- because the job you save may be your own!
